This section will give you ideas on getting out and about around Christchurch and Dorset. While we are developing this information here is a summary of one of the easiest and most popular walking and biking routes in the Christchurch area.
If you want to walk or cycle around Christchurch Harbour in Dorset you can start on the Christchurch or Bournemouth side of the Harbour. The road bridge at Tuckton goes over the River Stour and joins Bournemouth and Christchurch.
At Christchurch Harbour entrance The Run is the narrow, and sometimes fast flowing, channel that separates Bournemouth and Christchurch which can be crossed by ferry. The two routes below join up to make a circular tour of Christchurch Harbour.
Biking on the Christchurch side of Christchurch Harbour
From Tuckton Bridge turn right at the roundabout then right into the lower road called Willow Way until it reaches the river. From here you can follow the River Stour downstream along the river bank heading east towards Christchurch Quay. Cyclists need to dismount. At the Quay cross the small bridge next to Place Mill then turn immediately left onto the gravel path that follows the Mill Stream. This comes out at the Christchurch Castle ruins on Bridge Street.
From here you have a number of routes to Mudeford Quay but the easiest is by turning right onto the road. Follow Purewell then at the roundabout turn into Stanpit which becomes Mudeford. Keep going until you see the signs for Mudeford Quay. You can cross by ferry to Mudeford Sandspit.
